The Surrogates Movie: Living Remotely Is Not So Unreal

Yesterday night I watched the 'Surrogates' movie at the cinema and, although it's far away of having a place among my favorite films, I liked it. However, this is not a post about the movie itself but about the main idea of its plot: Would you like to live your life by means of a robot while you keep on safely lying on a coach at home while a helmet connected to a computer reads your brain?

Taking a look at the trailer of 'Surrogates' is likely the best starting point to understand this idea:

Yes, as you have just seen in this video, people in the movie live in a kind of Second Life: They choose who they want to be and this is supposed to reduce the crime rates because – at least theoretically – everybody  feel happy with their self.

Although the idea of taking the control of a robot to avoid dangers can be interesting in cases such as wars or special jobs (bomb deactivating, putting out fires and so on) the scriptwriters seem to have forgotten some of the features of human beings (maybe because they just try to entertain the audience). For instance, we all don't usually value those things that are reached without effort.

We all live in a sort of 'virtual life' when we are out of our home taking into account what is politically correct or not, but if the kind of life which is shown in the movie were possible we would likely get bored of being able to choose who we'd like to be and would miss our previous – and maybe not so happy – life.
